Before Michael Antonio Smith left for Iraq, he donated all “all his stuff” to others, said Reverend Dwight Page. “I’m talking about good stuff,” he added. “He saw something we didn’t see, that people needed it.”
SGT Smith was a 1999 high school graduate. On his return home, SGT Smith intended to attend Southern Arkansas University Tech once he completed his military service. Reverend Page recalled that Michael was “one of the guys. He would get along with everybody – keep on keepin’ on,” Reverend Page said. “You don’t find that too much today. I never heard him cuss. He would give the shirt off his back.” SGT Smith is survived by his parents, Donald Ray Smith and Deborah Smith.
SGT Smith’s father spoke of his son, and described the awesome support he and his wife have been given.
We have received so many prayers and phone calls,” Donald Smith said. “The outpouring of love has been remarkable. The number of calls we have received has been impressive.”
“Michael was a computer whiz and that’s what he wanted to go to school for,” Donald Smith explained. “He was a good child. Never gave us any problems. He was a good man. He was never affected by peer pressure. He was an individualist.”
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2
