LCPL Daniel Morris was born Sept. 22, 1987, in Colorado Springs, CO, a son of Carol (Wood) Morris Wendell. He graduated in 2005 from Wilson Memorial High School where he played trumpet in the marching band and left memorable impressions with faculty and students. He enjoyed video games, Seinfeld episodes and working with computers. Before joining the Marine Corps in 2005, Daniel worked at McDonald’s in the Staunton Wal-Mart, and in Community Development at Augusta County Government Center. He was loved by the employees of Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center and Augusta County Government Center.
“Even though 9/11 occurred before he entered high school, Daniel was determined to be a Marine and go to Iraq. He was prepared to fight for this country. At his young age he wanted to go so that a husband or father wouldn’t have to go … he was ready to serve. And he was ready to die.” Lynn R. Mitchell
A February 14, 2011 guest book entry describes LCPL Morris: Never will I forget what a nice and humble spirited person LCPL Morris was. The short amount of time I knew him made everlasting impressions..LCPL Morris was a person that could bring light into the darkest of rooms. Someone who not only drew a circle around himself and his family, but a circle around his friends co-workers and strangers as well. He welcomed anybody that came around with a warm heart. Lynn R. Mitchell, SWAC Girl of Staunton Waynesboro Augusta Counties wrote about LCPL Morris and the days surrounding his death: I did not know Daniel … but he was the age of my youngest child. To decide at such a young age to serve one’s country shows a maturity way beyond that of many others their age. Our volunteer military is out there protecting us, standing guard over us, giving us the freedom to live life…This is a stark reminder …Our lives will go on…now the community will wrap arms around the Morris family at this sad time. Please say a prayer and thank them for their sacrifice for our freedom.
